Bacterial Membranes & Generation of Electricity
- Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC): 2 categories
- 1. Uses a mediating chemical that transfer electrons from the bacterium in a cell to the anode (mediator MFC).
- 2. Uses electrochemically active redox proteins such as cytochromes on the bacterial outer membrane to transfer electrons directly to the anode (mediator-less MFC)
NOTE: MFC converts chemical energy to electrical energy.
In an MFC, the anoxic anode chamber is connected internally to the cathode chamber via an ion exchange membrane with the circuit completed by an external wire.
